Things to do in Rockport, TX with kids
Rockport is a small bay town with calm water, cheap admission and short drives between stops. That combination makes it one of the easier places on the Texas coast to visit with young children.
Why Rockport works for families
Most Texas beaches face the open Gulf, with surf that can knock a four-year-old off their feet. Rockport sits on Aransas Bay behind barrier islands, so the water at Rockport Beach is usually flat and shallow. That alone makes it a favorite with parents of toddlers.
The town is also compact. The beach, harbor, aquarium, Texas Maritime Museum, art center and downtown shops sit within a few blocks of each other. You can park once and walk to most of them, which matters when someone needs a nap or a bathroom on short notice.
Costs stay low. The Maritime Museum runs on pay-what-you-can admission, the aquarium is free, and Rockport Beach charges a modest daily vehicle pass rather than a per-person fee.
The best family activities, by type
Beaches and water
Rockport Beach Park is the obvious first stop. It was the first beach in Texas to earn Blue Wave certification for water quality and safety, and it has a playground, shade cabanas, showers and a fishing pier. Read our Rockport Beach guide before you go.
Museums for short attention spans
The Aquarium at Rockport Harbor is small and free, and a good size for kids under eight. Older kids usually prefer the Texas Maritime Museum next door, with its boats and artifacts from the 1686 wreck of La Belle. The Fulton Mansion in Fulton suits kids seven and up who like history and old houses.
Nature and wildlife
Drive ten miles north to Goose Island State Park to see the Big Tree, a coastal live oak with a trunk about 35 feet around. Kids tend to remember it for years. From late October through mid-April, the endangered whooping cranes winter at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. Our crane season guide covers how to see them.
Fishing
Rockport is a fishing town, and the public piers make it easy to try. Kids under 17 do not need a Texas fishing license. See fishing with kids in Rockport for simple rigs and the best spots.
A sample one-day family plan
- 8:00 a.m. Short walk at the Connie Hagar Cottage Sanctuary while it is cool and birds are active.
- 9:00 a.m. Beach time at Rockport Beach Park before the midday heat and crowds.
- 12:00 p.m. Lunch downtown, then rinse off and change.
- 1:30 p.m. Indoor break at the aquarium and the Texas Maritime Museum on Navigation Circle.
- 4:00 p.m. Drive to Goose Island State Park to see the Big Tree and fish off the pier until sunset.
For a slower day with toddlers, drop the museum and stretch the beach and nap time instead.
When to visit
Spring (March–May): mild weather, wildflowers at Goose Island and the spring bird migration. Beach water is still cool for swimming early in the season.
Summer (June–August): warmest water and the busiest beach weekends. Plan outdoor time for mornings and evenings. Hurricane season runs June through November, so watch forecasts.
Fall (September–November): the HummerBird Celebration in September, Seafair in early October, and fewer crowds. Often the best time for a family weekend.
Winter (December–February): too cool for swimming most days, but it is peak whooping crane season and lodging is easier to find.
Practical tips
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen, hats and a pop-up shade if you do not want to compete for cabanas.
- Pack insect repellent for any trip to Goose Island or the refuge.
- Many small attractions keep limited hours and close one or two weekdays. Check each listing before you build a day around it.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Rockport Beach faces Aransas Bay, so the water is usually calm and shallow far from shore. It has a playground, shade cabanas, restrooms and outdoor showers. Keep toddlers within arm's reach and watch for jellyfish after windy days.
How much does it cost to get into Rockport Beach?
The beach charges a vehicle entry fee instead of a per-person fee. Recent visitors report about $10 per car for a day pass and about $40 for an annual pass. Call the Aransas County Navigation District at (361) 729-6661 to confirm current prices.
What can kids do in Rockport when it rains?
Head to the Texas Maritime Museum (pay what you can), the free Aquarium at Rockport Harbor, the Rockport Center for the Arts and the Fulton Mansion's Education and History Center.
When is the best time to see whooping cranes near Rockport?
The cranes usually arrive in late October and leave by mid-April. December through February is the most reliable time. Boat tours from Rockport and Fulton run roughly November through March.

No. Anglers under 17 do not need a Texas fishing license, and nobody needs one to fish from the shore or a pier inside a Texas state park such as Goose Island.
How far is Rockport from Corpus Christi?
About 35 miles northeast of Corpus Christi on State Highway 35, usually a 40- to 50-minute drive.
